Three Generations Winemaking Under Montserrat
From slate to bottle: Mediterranean patience
In La Beguda Baixa, three women have transformed fifty years of family tradition into a benchmark for organic viticulture. Castell d’Age crafts wines and cavas guided by lunar cycles and an ancestral reverence for the land.
Three Women, a Silent Revolution in Penedès

The story began with Aurèlia Figueras, who breathed life into the family lands. It continued with Anne Marie Comtesse, from Switzerland, who founded the cellars over thirty years ago and pioneered organic farming in Penedès long before it was a trend. Today, Olivia Junyent represents the third generation, leading the leap into biodynamic agriculture.
Based in an 18th-century farmhouse on the southern slopes of Montserrat, the estate spans six distinct farms—including Can Aguilera and Can Gener—featuring a mosaic of limestone, slate (llicorella), and clay soils. From the first Cabernet Sauvignon planted by grandfather Josep Maria Junyent to modern experiments, the family has always let each variety find its perfect habitat.
The Cosmos Dictates the Harvest Calendar
Biodynamics here is a conviction, not a marketing label. Castell d’Age works in harmony with lunar and planetary cycles, creating their own cow manure compost and maintaining spontaneous ground cover to foster biodiversity.
In the cellar, spontaneity rules: natural fermentations, no additives, and aging in 1,000-liter clay amphorae or oak barrels. Their Cavas follow the traditional champenoise method with extreme patience—including manual riddling for fifteen months or more. There is no rush when the fruit needs time to speak for itself. #Naturalwines
Olive Oil: The Estate’s Other Treasure
Arbequina olive trees have coexisted with the vines since the beginning. Harvested between November and December at their peak ripeness, the olives undergo a single cold pressing to produce an extra virgin olive oil that is fruity, sweet, and fresh.
Castell d’Age represents the fusion of Swiss precision and Catalan tradition, symbolized by the griffin on their labels. What started as an intuitive project by three women has become a global reference for responsible viticulture. No manifestos, no noise—just earth, time, and respect.
